Rep. Hogan was delighted to join former Lt. Governor Karyn Polito for a presentation at Mevion Medical Systems – a leading provider of proton therapy systems for use in radiation treatment for cancer patients. These therapy systems are used world-wide in the treatment of cancer and Mevion is expanding cancer care services to UMass Memorial Health – Marlborough.
Proton therapy destroys tumors with a precise, targeted dose of radiation. It is superior to traditional photon (x-ray) radiation because it minimizes radiation exposure to nearby healthy tissue, potentially reducing or eliminating short and long term treatment complications. This makes proton therapy the preferred treatment option for patients with cancers in sensitive locations, such as near the brain, spine, heart and eye.
“Pending regulatory approval, Marlborough Hospital will be merged into UMass Memorial Medical Center, and the Marlborough campus operated as a campus under the medical center license,” said Shelly Hazlett, media and public relations director for UMass Memorial Health. “It is our hope that this merger will help further stabilize and strengthen health care across our region.”
UMass Marlborough also plans to spend $36 million to expand its Emergency Department to help alleviate overcrowding and reduce patient wait times. Marlborough is one of two regional medical centers utilized by my district and constituents.
