The MA House unanimously passed a major bill to fix our primary care crisis — making it easier and cheaper to see a doctor close to home.
The legislation provides:
- More funding for primary care so it’s easier to find and keep a doctor
- $25 million for scholarships & loan repayment to bring more primary care providers into the field
- Insurance must cover mobile health visits — care that comes to you, whether at home or in your community
- Lower prescription costs — rebates now go straight to you at the pharmacy counter, not somewhere else in the system
- Support for community health centers and vulnerable hospitals, so care stays accessible in underserved areas
- New guardrails on AI in health insurance — technology should support your doctor’s judgment, not replace it
Rep. Schwartz, who spent years practicing primary care himself, put it simply in his inaugural speech: primary care struggles to deliver its full benefits without better access, but has huge potential to anchor a healthy healthcare system when given the chance to thrive.
Health policy experts are already calling this a potential turning point — one physician compared its possible impact to “Romneycare,” the reform package that helped inspire the Affordable Care Act nationally.
Next step: a conference committee will merge this bill with the Senate’s version. Stay tuned! Thank you to Speaker Ron Mariano, HWM Chair Aaron Michlewitz, Chair John Lawn, and everyone who helped get this across the finish line.
